A Legacy of Quality: Helvi’s Catering
Founded in the late 1970s, Helvi’s Catering carries a storied legacy of service that began at the legendary Husky Truck Stop in Lively. Helvi’s reputation for exceptional home-style cooking naturally transitioned into a premier catering business, serving weddings and corporate events throughout the region.
In 1994, the family tradition entered a new era when Helvi’s son, Ed Thurston, took the lead. Ed brought a sophisticated culinary background to the company, including:
-
Formal Training: A culinary school graduate with an apprenticeship at the Westin Hotel (Edmonton).
-
Elite Experience: Professional tenures at Chateau Lake Louise and the Edmonton Petroleum Club.
-
Professional Honors: An Interprovincial Red Seal Chef and former member of the award-winning Alberta Junior Culinary Team.
Today, Ed masterfully balances traditional home-style favorites with a modern, gourmet flair. This dual approach ensures Helvi’s Catering satisfies every palate—from those seeking classic comfort food to those desiring a fine-dining experience. Whether catering for local businesses, elegant weddings, or bustling film sets, the company remains rooted in its founding values: pride, quality, and exceptional service.
